Wondering if Spyblocker stickers really protect your webcam? We compare them with full desk privacy filters and help you decide what fits your setup.
Quick answer
Spyblocker stickers are a simple, affordable webcam cover, but they do not protect your screen from shoulder surfing. For full desk privacy, you need a separate privacy filter.
What Spyblocker protects vs. what it doesn't
Spyblocker stickers physically block the camera lens, so no one can see you through your webcam. That covers remote snooping and accidental camera activation.
However, they do nothing to stop someone beside you from reading your monitor. If your desk faces a hallway or you work in a busy cafe, a privacy filter is the tool for that job.
Trade-offs to consider
Spyblocker stickers are reusable and easy to apply, but they add a visible sticker on your device. Some people prefer a built-in camera shutter for a cleaner look.
Privacy filters reduce viewing angles, which can be annoying if you often share your screen with a colleague. They also cost more than a sticker pack.
For a home office where you control the room, a webcam cover may be enough. In shared or public spaces, you likely need both layers.
Diagnosis: Does Spyblocker solve your privacy issue?
- Symptom: You worry someone might watch through your webcam, or you want a quick privacy fix for your laptop. Spyblocker directly addresses this symptom.
- Likely cause: Your camera has no built-in shutter, or you don't want to rely on software settings to disable it. A physical cover is the most reliable way to block the lens.
- Corrective action: Apply a Spyblocker sticker over the camera lens. If you also need to keep your screen contents private from people nearby, add a privacy filter that matches your monitor size. Check your monitor size before buying a privacy filter.
- Stop or choose another option: If your main concern is shoulder surfing or screen visibility in public, stop relying on a webcam cover alone. Choose a dedicated screen privacy filter instead.
